Shopping For Baby Toys The Eco-Friendly Way

Monday, March 1st, 2010

You may just be a stay-at-home mom, but you can still do your part in preserving the environment. For a start, avoid buying any of those plastic and certainly toxic products that can be bad for your baby and the planet. If you believe in environmentalism, show it in your own motherly way. Transform your tot into a green baby.

You cannot bring your advocacy with you when you go to a department store though. They may sell organic toys and other similar goods but you can be certain of the lack of choices you will have. Apparently, a department store still has more products made of toxic materials than organic ones.

That is the challenge in rearing a green baby. If not for this, shopping is certainly easy, as you only have to choose from the very first choices available upon sight. However, giving up on such a good cause affects your child’s future. Caring for the environment now means preparing a healthy planet for you him when he grows up.

Actually, it is the first part that is difficult. It is in making a pledge to yourself and to your child that you will only purchase safe baby items. Safety is not just for your child’s health. It is also for the very planet he is going to live in. As soon as you have made your mind, you will not feel the burden of searching for items like organic toys.

Shopping in a department store for green baby products may just lead you dead ends. It is also unwise to read each of the labels because it is time-consuming. Ask for a sales representative’s help and you may be directed to these stocks.

You certainly prefer to do your shopping in the easiest method. Do not leave the house and put your PC on. You can browse the internet for online shops that sell these items. If you are looking for organic toys, allow your child to see the graphics. He will surely display his appreciation to a particular toy.

Actually, you may find more non-toxic baby products there. There are accessories, clothes, and beddings all made of purely organic materials. You can be sure that your green baby will not harmed as he sucks, licks, or bites on these. When the time comes that you have to dispose these, you will not feel any guilt for contributing to solid waste pollution.

There is no doubt that the internet provides the best shopping experience. It takes less time and exertion. Besides, with a mouse and search engines, finding things like organic toys is very easy. Another good thing is that you do not have to be away from your baby while shopping.

Lots of people want to be environmentally friendly, so they buy green baby items. Items like organic toys ensure that we don’t trash our world just to give our kids a few things. Click here to get your own unique version of this article with free reprint rights.

South-Western Home Decor

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

So what exactly is southwestern home decor and how can you introduce it into your own home? Well, to begin with southwestern home decor reflects the southwest and all its best traits. Southwestern home decor uses colourful throw rugs, gorgeous wall hangings, and if you look hard enough, you can even find great kitchen accessories as well.

If you’re considering introducing southwestern home decor into your residence, first of all, you have to determine whether it will blend in with your existing decor or whether it will clash badly. Almost all southwestern home decor involves bright, eye-catching colours and stunning designs and motifs.

So, if your existing furniture would clash with any of these beautiful pieces, you can do one of two things. First up, you could always just throw out every single piece of unwanted furniture that you have and replace them with gorgeous pieces of southwestern home decor. Or you could just buy one or two pieces of the southwestern home decor range and match them carefully with your existing knick-knacks.

Personally speaking, I would rather replace everything I have since there’s some wear, but in reality that’s just not possible. For one thing it would just be way over my budget, and for another I would rather not have to listen to a lecture from my mother about extravagance. I’ve found out that you can get away from from your friends but not from your mother!

However, I’m also a little happy that I didn’t give into my initial impulse and renovate everything in the southwestern home decor style. Granted that it does look great, but sometimes I also like the peace and quiet that some of my other pieces of furniture bring about in me. Therefore, I have now come up with the perfect solution and have instead resorted to purchasing one-off pieces that attract my attention and sprinkling my home with those instead.

And I have to say that its made quite a difference to the look and feel of my entire home. Lush and rich pieces of the more traditional furniture now sit quite comfortably next to the more flamboyant and stunning designs of my southwestern home decor. I’ve even bought a great rug for my bathroom floor and a beautiful set of hand towels. My kitchen has a new set of southwestern motifs, and my foyer has the most amazing lampshade and statuette in prominent view.

Although all of this sounds a bit much, I’ve found that this is the easiest way to bring the splendours of southwestern home decor into your life, without going the whole hog and replacing my entire house with southwestern decor and motifs.

After all, you only want to bring a dash of southwestern decor to your home, not the whole sheebang. Oh, and did I forget to mention the beautiful tapestry I bought the other day? It’s just perfect.

The Chinese Calendar

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Prior to their implementation of the Western solar calendar system, the Chinese almost exclusively followed their own lunar calendar for working out the times of planting and harvesting and festival days. Though people in China today use the Western calendar for almost all business, governmental and practical matters of daily life, the old method still serves as the basis for determining many seasonal holidays. This coexistence of two calendar systems has long been accepted by the people of China.

However, this does not only apply to China, it also occurs in most other Eastern countries, like Thailand, and most Arabic countries.

A lunar month is calculated by measuring the period of time needed for the moon to finish its full cycle of 29 and a half days, a standard that makes the lunar year a full 11 days shorter than its solar counterpart. This disparity is made up every 19 years by the addition of seven lunar months.

The 12 lunar months are further divided into 24 solar divisions characterized by the four seasons and periods of heat and cold, all of which bear a close relationship to the annual cycle of agricultural work.

The Chinese calendar – very much like the Hebrew calendar- is a combination of the solar and lunar calendars in that it strives to have its years coincide with the tropical year and its months coincide with the synodic months. It is not surprising that a few similarities exist between the Chinese and the Hebrew calendar.

For example, an average year has 12 months, a leap year has 13 months. An ordinary year has 353, 354, or 355 days, a leap year has 383, 384, or 385 days. When determining what a Chinese year will be like, one needs to make a number of astronomical calculations.

First of all, you have to work out the dates for the new moons. In these instances, a new Moon is the completely black Moon (that is to say, when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun), not the first visible crescent, as is used by the Islamic and Hebrew calendars. The date of a new moon is then the first day of a new month.

The reason why the majority of countries which had their own calendars had to dump them in favour of the Western, Julian calendar that we use today, is business. First the British and then the Americans ran international business and they used the Julian calendar.Anyone who wanted to work with them had to follow suit. This is why national policy often varies from local custom in Third World countries.

The government desires to trade on the International markets, but the normal family in the country can not. So, the government adopted the Julian calendar but the people only pay lip service to it. I live in Thailand and people here do not even use the 24 hour day divided into two halves. Their day has four sections of six hours each and the first part starts at 6AM, not midnight. Therefore, they have four 4 o’clocks a day, for example and no 7 o’clocks. They are also 543 years ahead of us, although this is more common, for instance in Muslim countries.

Living Room Decorating Ideas in Black and White

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

When people start thinking about living room decorating ideas and making changes to their residence, whether it be one or two rooms or even the complete house, the first thing that usually comes to mind is ‘what colour’. Usually, people choose colours that they like or those which correspond with pieces of their existing furniture. When searching for living room decorating ideas, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, when used in decorating demonstrates style and creates drama. Top interior designers say that every room in the house could benefit from using a slash of black. Black is a colour which anchors and stabilizes a room. Bringing sophistication, black is certainly a colour that requires attention. Living room decorating ideas for a home using black may include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to bring definition to the focal points in a room. Black is just one of the colours that stands out, but it is definitely one of the most eye-catching!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant atmosphere. This combination can be added to any room in a home making it a sophisticated area. Black and white are frequently used in contemporary interior design and often used to highlight other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to conceptualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic shades.

The flooring is a great area to start when you’re having living room decorating ideas. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful checkered pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another beautiful idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using stencils of the opposite colour for decoration is also stunning. These all are fantastic ideas for decorating a home.

Can you think of anything more perfect than white walls in the Mediterranean style? Painting the walls white or even an off-white, say smoke-white or apple-whitemakes an ideal backdrop for accessories such as paintings framed in black. Great living room decorating ideas! Elegant black window surrounds or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would certainly create an aura of sophistication. Perhaps a glass-topped table with a black iron trim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a home using only black and white.

A bedroom decorated using black and white would be beautiful stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-frame, covered with a striped black and white duvet or eiderdown. For the pillow cases, you could use either all black or all white and could add throw cushions in the opposite colour.

A chunky leather black or white armchair in the corner would certainly accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a sophisticated piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the stark white walls would look really neat and tidy and you could jazz it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the stylish home decor needs a little colour to complete the look, perhaps a throw or cushion in a bold color like red or gold, for the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to accent the room. Ideas for decorating a home are numerous. However, finding one that suits you and those that live in your home with you is important. It’s nice to do something radical and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite a while.

Astronomy For Beginners

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Although astronomy is the oldest science, it is still at the forefront of not only scientific thought, but also that of the public at large. Who hasn’t looked up at the galaxy while walking home late at night and wondered? Having said that though, the ancient people of definitely the northern hemisphere, but probably both hemispheres, knew the movements of the stars and planets better than most of us do today.

They knew even then, thousands of years ago, that the majority of stars seem to appear in the Eastern skies at night and travel on circular paths. They also noticed that some ’stars’ were ‘wanderers’ (we call them planets) and that sometimes they travelled ‘against the flow’.

They also named groups of stars that we now call constellations or even galaxies and knew that those visible in the winter were different from those visible in the summer.and that others were visible all year round. The average common man of 5,000 – 10,000 years ago almost certainly knew more about the movement of the celestial bodies than the average common man of today does. (I mean men and women here, of course).

They learned how to calculate or at least find the extremities of the sunrise and went to extraordinary lengths to mark those points with massive stone structures, such as Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, probably to facilitate the location of certain positions of the sun or other planets or stars, which may have been important to their religious beliefs or crop cycles.

In 1609, Galileo invented the first artificial device for studying the stars and planets. It was the first astronomical telescope and through it he was able to see things millions of miles away that no person had ever seen before. Because of the conclusions he came to from his observations, he had trouble with the Roman Catholic Church and was often in serious danger for his life, so radical were his discoveries.

But mankind was not to be intimidated, and since then we have gone on to build ever bigger and ever better astronomical telescopes through which we can even detect radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, infrared waves and gamma waves from outer space. Forty years ago, we even travelled to our Moon. and we have sent rockets to eight of the nine planets in our Solar System, as well as to several comets and asteroids.

Where are we going next? That decision was always up to the government of the United States and the old Soviet Union, but now there are other players in the field. What will China or India want to explore with their possibly slightly different outlook on life? Or will it be just a question of financial benefit?

The world may be in a state of change and power may be moving from its traditional seats, but it has not lessened interest in questions that scientists think can only be answered in space. These are exciting times in the science of astronomy, but then man has always found astronomy exciting.

Teen Rooms Decor

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Teen rooms are the bane of mothers everywhere. It’s not even like when they were younger. In those days, if their rooms were in a mess, you could shout at them and get them to clean it up, and, barring that, you could go in and do it. But when it comes to teens and their rooms you’re dealing with a whole different kettle of fish.

Yes, you could go and tell them to tidy up their rooms. And true, you could shout at them a little too, if you wanted to, or you could go and clean up the room yourself. However, that’s when the trouble begins. Teen rooms are sacred places and not to be interfered with unless you’re invited to.

Woe betide anyone who dares to move even one inch of that mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you had absolutely no right to move it. At least, that will be the argument of most teens, and you being the patient, caring mother that you are, will just roll your eyes and tell them that the whole pizza and day-old shirt thing just don’t go well together and you were just rescuing them from the anger of the stalking pizza slice.

Your teens will in turn roll their eyes and protest loudly, not to exaggerate, it wasn’t about to grow legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn’t that make a great science project. So, you keep cleaning and they keep putting things back. And so ends the story, and you’re right back to square one.

Of course, one way that you could deal with this bomb site is to redecorate it. Teen rooms might be sanctities to them, but even they would like it if you gave their rooms a great makeover.

That doesn’t mean that the room will be any tidier after they have moved back in, but at least you’ll have been able to seen the inside of the room long enough to tide you over for the next few years. That is unless you’re thinking of redecorating their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem, since teens are famously unusual with regard to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are done out quite differently from that which you had anticipated and that which you would have done beforehand. This is where a comprise should be struck, if your teen demands black walls in his room, then say you want to use another colour too that will offset the black.

Be prepared to give in a little on your ideas no matter how silly their ideas are. After all, they’re only a teen for a while and later they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had.

So, it is your duty as a parent to allow them these fleeting moments in their lives so that they can look back on them with mock horror and disallow their own children from doing the same to their own teen rooms.

Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had only just seen an article on some stylish country home decor or turning your house into a small country haven in another magazine and it had interested you.

Page upon page of the magazine is filled with what can only be described as the most perfect country home decor you can imagine. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine’s pages. But, you could definitely go for that beautiful table runner without too much of a problem. And if you donated all those modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn’t really be splashing out, would you, since you would have already done your best for charity and given them all these things?

And what about exchanging those flashy blinds for something that’s a bit more in the country home decor style. And while you’re going about it, perhaps you could even swap that ugly lampshade you received as a Christmas gift for something a little more country.

Plastic Shower Curtains

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

So, one day, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became all the rage. But, like most fads, common sense resurfaced and the fashions that once were, have come back as they do. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are easily available from most stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t rush to get rid of your old glass doors just yet. The cleanliness and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly entrenched with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by them and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll discover, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are laid back and will smile when asked about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the benefits of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to prevent mildew.

Most convenient of all, is the easy cleaning granted by glass shower doors. However, as the fans of fabric shower curtains will also tell you, glass doors have their disadvantages too, the biggest of which being that if you permit the cleaning of the doors to slide for even one week, stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have a much stronger will than you do.

And if you don’t perform a good regular cleaning of the glass shower doors, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will start to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a smug smile on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour sponging their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and therefore can be changed easily.

Office Decorating

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

It’s been at least a year now since you moved to your new work place and officially took over your new office. At first, you were busy decorating your new home and learning a new job, but now that you’re settled in you start noticing the same things that you noticed when you first arrived.

The walls are a boring, drab colour and looking decidedly depressing, the sun streaming in through the heavy duty blinds is barely enough to light a mouse hole and the furniture is just about as grotty and plain as it can get. You reckon that an acceptable amount of time has passed for you to start an office decorating project.

Naturally, before you start it’s always a good idea to make certain that the powers that be don’t have a problem with your redecoration plans. And remember that it is only an office and so you should treat your decorating plans as such.

Emulsioning the walls a snazzy red colour possibly might not work. However, you could brighten things up a bit by repainting the walls a bright and jolly colour that won’t upset anyone, least of all you. Then you could always take down those old blinds that have been hanging there since the early’70’s and replace them with something more pleasing and more functional.

On the other hand, if the whole of the office is done up in the same style with the same blinds hanging on every window, your a la mode changes might not go down too well with your co-workers. So, think twice before doing something drastic that changes the whole style and dynamic of the entire office.

There are, however, easier ways you can carry out your office decorating project without too much hassle on your part and which doesn’t necessarily need to be thought over too much. You can brighten up any room by placing a couple of flowering plants here and there around your office.

But, if you’re at all like me and you don’t have green fingers or if your presence is death to any plants near you, then maybe you shouldn’t bother with plants. You could however bring in some bright prints and hang them up on your walls. Or perhaps you have kids and they have painted some lovely pictures for you.

These also work well, and will show your colleagues a different side of you. Don’t get stressed out over anything though. You really don’t need a simple redecorating project to add to the rest of your worries and besides an office decorating project should be fun and stress free.

Remember, your office decorating project should not entail your turning the whole office, or yourself, on its head. It should be something that you can live with on a daily basis.

After all, you work in your office for most of the day, so it ought to be a place where you can feel just as relaxed as you are in your own home.

Your boyfriend, now your fiance is all laid back and casual and said that anything you want is OK with him. He was sure that you would do a great job, just tell him if you wanted anything.

Someone else has the fantastic idea of getting a load of those little disposable cameras so that those who wanted to, would be able to take photos, and you’d end up with a great many more candid pictures than you otherwise would have had.

Yet another person suggests a great overall design theme. Your wedding decorating ideas are now flowing fast and furious as one person after another chimes in giving you all the assistance you need to sort out your wedding plans.
